Happy, happy weekend!
It’s been A Week over here. (And in case you need clarification, I mean the y’all gonna make me lose my mind kind of week.)
Mid-summer doldrums make for very restless natives — and my house has four of them. Restlessness breeds loud, needy, cranky kids, and my introverted nature has been kicking and screaming for some peace and solitude.
It’s time for replenishing myself and enjoying some quality self-care.
Self-care? What’s that, you say?
I know, I know — it’s so hard to come by. And there is always that little nagging voice in your mind telling you not to bother.
There are only so many hours in the day! The kids always need something; then there are all the chores. Sooo much laundry! And what about my husband? Besides, isn’t it kinda selfish to do things for myself??
If it’s been forever and a day since you actually took some time for YOU, then read on, my friend.
You may have joined me for last month’s Self-Care Challenge where we talked about reframing our vision of self-care — learning to see it as a good and allowing ourselves to practice it, guilt-free.
One of the (countless) beauties of Catholicism and the communion of Saints is that whenever I want to make an argument for something good, I can almost always find someone holy to back me up. So allow me to introduce you to this gem from Pope St. John Paul II:
I sense tiredness in [you]. You need to wait things out, some time to do nothing.”
John Paul wrote this in a letter to one of his dear friends, a young woman who was in the literal trenches of motherhood, wrangling 2-year-old twins. JP2 was already one of my all-time fave Saints, but when I discovered his gentle, gracious perspective on motherhood, I felt like I’d struck gold.
Here you have one of the greatest Saints of the Church telling a young mama that she needs some time to do nothing. In other words, he was telling her to take care of her own needs.
If you have been doubting that self-care is actually legit — or if you’ve been dragging your feet about making yourself one of your many priorities — then let this be a little divine kick in the pants. 🙂
So, take a deep breath right now, and tell yourself, Self-care isn’t selfish. Self-care is life-giving, both to me and those I care for. Today’s a great day to begin, sweet mama!
